Alev Erkilet was born in Ankara in 1962. She completed her primary, secondary and high school education at TED Ankara College. She received her BA in sociology from Hacettepe University. She completed her master's degree (1985) and his Ph.D.(1996) at Hacettepe University Sociology Department where she also worked as a research assistant. In this period, she involved in the research titled "Lifestyles on the Basis of Career Professions in Metropolis and Family Structure " for the Family Research Institute and worked for the Specialization Commissions of the State Planning Organization. She worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Kırıkkale University between 1997-2000. In 2006 and 2007, she conducted the sociological researches of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Urban Design Project for Historical Peninsula Conservation. In the same year, she took part in the research Project titled "Media Professions and Family Perception of Media" for ASAGEM. This work is published in 2008. She worked as an assistant professor and associate professor in the department of sociology at Kırklareli University between February 2012 and September 2013. After September 2013, she continued to work at the Department of Communication Design and Media, and the Department of City and Regional Planning of Sakarya University respectively. Then, she worked at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Sociology Department for a year. In 2017, Erkilet joined Istinye University Sociology Department. She has seven books (Ortadoğu’da Modernleşme ve İslami Hareketler, Ele Geçirilemeyen Toprak Kuzey Kafkasya, Eleştirellikten Uyuma, Toplumsal Yapı ve Değişme Kuramları, Mazlum Doğu’nun Mağrur Çocukları, Kenti Dinlemek: Kültürel Miras, Kentsel Ayrışma ve Yoksulluğa Dair Yazılar, İstanbul Halkının Dilencilik Olgusuna Bakış Açısı (with İ. Coşkun)) and many articles published in edited books and academic journals.
